U-shaped Vs Rectangular Tipper Bodies: Which Is Better For Mining Dump Trucks?

Oct 23, 2026

U-shaped Body

Pros: Not much material sticks in the tub, so it unloads fast with almost nothing left behind. The low center of gravity keeps the truck stable on the move and while tipping, so you're less likely to tip over. Its smooth curved sides stop wear from piling up in one spot, which means the liners hold up better.

Cons: You get a smaller payload with the same outer dimensions. Bending and welding these curved bodies takes more labour, so they cost more. Oversized rocks can get stuck on the top rim every now and then.

Best application scenarios: Best suited for wet, sticky material - wet clay, damp ore, tailings, sludge and mud. You'll find these bodies widely used in metal mines, coal mines, wet sand pits and water works where you need a full, clean dump. Great for rough, rutted mine tracks where the truck tips many times a day.

Rectangular Body

Pros: It holds more material when the outside dimensions stay the same, great for hauling dry aggregates. The plain box design is simple to build, so it costs less. You can cut out and swap worn panels or liners right on site easily. It's also easy to fit extra side boards if you want to boost capacity.

Cons: Those sharp square corners catch wet clay, mud and damp ore, and a lot of material gets left behind after dumping. The corners take a lot of scraping impact, so they wear fast and can crack over time. It sits a bit higher, so it's less stable when tipping heavy loads.

Best application scenarios: Works really well for dry loose stuff: crushed rock, dry sand, gravel, dry coal and building rubble. You see these a lot at quarries, road jobs, construction waste hauling and dry stockyards. A good fit if you want more payload and need to keep your purchase cost down.
