Before You Pay: 8 Things African Buyers Should Verify When Buying A Used Truck From China

Sep 12, 2026

Buying a used truck from China can offer good value, but for many overseas buyers, especially first-time buyers, the biggest concern is not only the truck price.

The real concern is:

How can I make sure the truck I am paying for is the same truck I will receive?

Before making payment, buyers should verify the actual truck, its configuration, condition, documents, and export process.

Here are eight important things African truck buyers should confirm before sending payment.

1. Confirm That the Truck Really Exists

The first step is simple but very important.

Do not rely only on catalogue photos, edited videos, or old pictures.

Ask the supplier to provide current information about the actual truck, including:

Current photos from different angles

A walk-around video

Cab interior video

Engine compartment video

Chassis photos

Tire condition

Dashboard and mileage display

Vehicle identification plate

For higher-value purchases, buyers can also request a live video call.

During the video call, the supplier can show the exact truck in real time.

This helps reduce the risk of paying for a vehicle that is different from the one shown in the quotation.

2. Verify the Engine, Transmission and Axles

For used trucks, the original factory specification is not always the same as the current configuration.

Engines, transmissions, axles and other parts may have been repaired or replaced during previous use.

Therefore, buyers should confirm the actual components installed on the truck.

Important information includes:

Engine brand

Engine model

Horsepower

Transmission model

Number of gears

Rear axle type

Axle ratio when available

Emission standard

For example, two HOWO trucks may look very similar outside, but their engine, transmission or axle configuration can be different.

This can affect fuel consumption, maintenance cost, spare-parts availability and working performance.

3. Understand Whether the Truck Is Original Used or Refurbished

This is one of the most common misunderstandings in the used truck business.

A used truck may be sold in different conditions.

Some trucks remain close to their original used condition.

Others may be refurbished before export.

Refurbishment may include:

Repainting

Cab repair

Seat replacement

Tire replacement

Electrical repairs

Engine maintenance

Brake system repairs

Replacement of worn components

Refurbishment itself is not necessarily a problem.

The important point is transparency.

Buyers should clearly understand what has been repaired, replaced or repainted before making the purchase.

If you want an original-condition used truck, tell the supplier clearly before they begin searching.

4. Ask for a Cold Start and Engine Running Video

A short truck video is not enough to evaluate the mechanical condition.

Ask the supplier to show the truck starting and running.

A useful inspection video should include:

Cold engine start

Exhaust smoke

Engine sound

Idle condition

Oil pressure

Air pressure

Dashboard warning lights

Gear shifting

Brake operation

Excessive smoke, abnormal noise or unstable idle may indicate mechanical problems.

A running video cannot replace a full mechanical inspection, but it can help buyers identify obvious problems before payment.

5. Check the Chassis Carefully

For trucks used in mining, construction and heavy transport, the chassis is extremely important.

A truck may look clean after repainting, but structural damage can still exist underneath.

Buyers should request clear photos or videos of:

Main chassis rails

Cross members

Suspension

Leaf springs

Axles

Differential

Welding points

Rusted areas

Oil leakage

Special attention should be given to signs of major welding, bending or previous structural repair.

These problems may affect safety and long-term reliability.

6. Confirm the Export Documents Before Final Payment

A truck may be mechanically good but still create problems if the export documentation is incomplete.

Before final payment or shipment, buyers should confirm what documents will be provided.

Depending on the truck and destination country, common documents may include:

Commercial invoice

Packing list

Export declaration documents

Vehicle information documents

Bill of lading

Certificate of origin, when required

Inspection certificates, when required

Different countries may have different import requirements.

Before purchasing, the buyer should also confirm local regulations regarding:

Vehicle age

Emission standard

Left-hand drive or right-hand drive

Pre-shipment inspection

Import permits

Customs duties

A low-priced truck can become expensive if it cannot be imported legally into the destination country.

7. Confirm Exactly What the Price Includes

When comparing quotations from different suppliers, buyers should make sure they are comparing the same terms.

For example, a quotation may only include the truck price.

Another quotation may include:

Truck price

Inland transportation to port

Export handling

Port charges

Shipping

Insurance

Ask the supplier whether the price is:

EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF.

This avoids misunderstandings later.

A lower initial price does not always mean a lower total purchasing cost.

For African buyers, the final landed cost is often more important than the truck price alone.

8. Confirm the Truck Again Before Shipping

Before the truck enters the port, buyers should ask for a final confirmation.

This can include:

Final truck photos

Chassis number

Engine information

Loading photos

Port delivery photos

Shipping information

The purpose is to make sure the truck shipped is the same truck that was inspected and purchased.

For larger orders, each truck should be identified separately.

Why Verification Matters

Buying a used truck is different from buying a new standard product.

Every used truck has its own history, condition and level of wear.

Two trucks of the same model and year may have very different mechanical conditions.

That is why professional purchasing should not focus only on price.

The buyer should also verify:

The real truck

The real configuration

The real condition

The real documents

The real shipping process

These steps can reduce unnecessary purchasing risks and help buyers make better decisions.

Our Approach

At DAFU Machinery, we believe overseas truck purchasing should be transparent.

Before recommending a truck, we try to understand the buyer's:

Working application

Road conditions

Required truck type

Horsepower

Budget

Quantity

Destination country

Preference for original used or refurbished trucks

We can then help the customer search for suitable truck options, inspect the actual vehicle, verify important configurations and support the export and shipping process.

For customers who are already in China, we also welcome you to visit Liangshan and inspect the trucks in person.

A good truck purchase is not only about getting a good price. It is about knowing exactly what you are buying before you pay.
